Eureka!!! Particle found in Switzerland.

Andrew John Collins

Nearly 50 years ago one individual names Peter Higgs put forward the theory that the Higgs field interacts with the small particles that are the building blocks of atoms, the field weighs them down so they cannot shoot around the universe at the speed of light. Nobody following this theory has been able to prove the existence of the famous Higgs field…until now.

The last few days in social media have been ruled by two subjects, the first being that of American music artist and Odd Future member Frank Ocean admittingly ‘coming out’ in a letter via his Tumblr and the second (which happens to be just a tad more important) is one of the most important scientific discoveries in the history of our time.

The latter seems to be very confusing for many people, including myself at first, but if you take the time to explore the fundamentals of what has actually happened at the LHC then it begins to form quite a matter of importance. To put this in simple terms, the team over on the French/Swiss border working at the Large Hadron Collider have discovered a particle related to the Higgs thus proving the predictions are possibly correct. According to theory, the particle that has been discovered is thought to be responsible for all order in the world and without the constructive elements of matter then everything would behave in a similar way to light, with no restrictions and the freedom to float around and not combine with other particles, nothing would not be recognisable without mass.

This is clearly just the beginning for scientific discovery relating to the Higgs theory and if I am completely honest, my view of the entire project has changed, I am rather excited but at the same time fearful. Excited for the future of mankind and the discoveries that we could make related to our beginnings and origin yet fearful that this could all end in disaster and we are sucked into oblivion in less that a nanosecond because of a faulty fuse on the LHC over in Switzerland. Part of me feels we should not tamper with such things yet part of me is curious to what may be around the corner.

I hope they remember to pay their electrical bills on time or we’re all screwed, I thought the electricity going out half way through an episode of Hawaii Five-O was bad.
